EBooks For Children Using AAC Devices
For children using AAC, reading an “off the shelf” book can be a challenge. Many of the words used within stories are not a part of a typical core word App. Parents, teachers and speech therapists need to either modify the book or add vocabulary to their core to support independent reading.
Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP authored two ebooks, both specifically created as a tool to enhance the language and literacy skills of individuals using the Gateway© page sets. For children using Gateway 60 through 140, all of the words used within the books can be found within the Gateway Vocabulary. Even the names characters of each story (i.e., Muffin, the penguin and Vanilla, the Polar Bear) are a part of the Gateway core. As such, a user can independently read this book out loud without any modifications to Gateway.
