This set of practice sentences is intended to be used by professionals, parents, and others who will be working with an individual using one or more of the Gateway© page sets. The intent of the practice sentences is to familiarize a facilitator with the organization and general contents of the page sets.
When using these practice exercises, it is optimal go slowly and to scan each Gateway page as you work through the exercises. This will help you gain an awareness of the additional vocabulary that is contained on the page. Ultimately, this exercise should better prepare an individual for teaching the Gateway vocabulary to the AAC user.

| All individuals who use AAC can benefit from having access to a manual communication board. Manual boards can be used as a back up to a high tech device, such as the DV4 or MT4. Manual boards are also a very useful tool for helping children improve their expressive language performance. The following are sample communication boards designed by Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, and used as teaching tools for professionals. |
- Sample Board - a sample lexicon targeted for a 24 -29 month level of expressive language performance; Fitzgerald Key Format.

| This new test, authored by Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an easy to use tool for assessing the range of symbolic skills needed to: 1) design a communication board, 2) select an appropriate device page set and 3) establish appropriate AAC intervention goals for symbolic and syntactic development. It complements the many other components of the AAC assessment process. The TASP has 5 subtests - Symbol Size and Number, Grammatical Encoding, Categorization, and Syntactic Performance. Basals and ceilings have been established for each subtest. The TASP can be used with both children and adults. Administration time ranges from 10 - 20 minutes. The TASP can be administered in one setting or over a period of sessions. The TASP provides a starting point for designing or selecting an appropriate AAC device page set. It guides intervention goals as well as intervention strategies. It can serve as a tool to benchmark progress in aided communication performance. The TASP can be purchased through Mayer-Johnson, LLC (Item # M3MJ205) Cost - $299. |
